Mickey Seiler at 53

My friend Mickey Seiler turned 53 years old on Tuesday September 7.

On September 7, 1997, Mickey, Tim Seller (note Tim from earlier posts in this blog) and I set out to ride 100 miles from Killeen, TX to Cleburne, TX on Mickey’s 40th birthday. A hot September day in Texas we did not quite make the whole hundred.

Then on September 7, 2007, Mick’s 50th birthday we set out from Waco, TX to ride 100 miles. That birthday of Mick’s we made it. In fact, it was 110 miles.

From the mid 90s Mickey has run multiple marathons – including Boston. In fact everyone in Mickey’s family – wife Teri, children, Mickey Wayne, Andy, and Kristy – have run at least one marathon.

Last February when I put out the announcement to friends about the intended cross country bike ride with an invitation to join me, Mickey said, “I don’t want to do hills.” But in early June, he called back and asked if I was still open for company.

“Open for company?! Absolutely! What state?”

“The whole country.”

“Did you say the whole country? I thought you didn’t want to do hills?”

“I changed my mind.”

“Mick – that would be fantastic. It will be great to have you on the ride!!”

And great it has been!!

And hills? Mountains? There ain’t no mountain tall enough to shut Mickey down. Mick is a phenomenal cyclist! He is like the energizer bunny. He just keeps going. I’ve been looking at the back of his orange shirt now for most of the day every day since we left the western mountains. Had I done this ride alone I would be at last five days behind where we are now.

Congratulations on 53 years, friend! This year it was 127 miles, a new birthday record ride.

What’s next?
