Kansas - Wind

Stats Monday, August 30 – Brandon, CO to Dighton, KS. Day distance 109.4; ride time 7 h 19 m (12 h 15 m); ave speed 14.9; total climb 683; total distance miles 1,858.8.

Having slept in Montana and Brittany’s yard we got an early start from Brandon (no breakfast). We figured we’d eat a couple hours later when we passed through a town.

The wind was down but not gone as we started. Mostly out of the south. In just a few miles we crossed into Kansas.

Kansas – what can be said? It’s flat. And wind. More wind. And more wind.

A plus for Kansas are its drivers. Even the truck drivers. They are the most considerate and courteous we have experienced. Most slow down or they get all the way over into the left lane giving us lots of space. So we are thankful for Kansas drivers.

Also, people are very friendly. In the stores of the small towns they are pleasant and ask questions about our trip.

After a day of battling the wind we finally make it into Dighton. We are camp in the city park which has a picnic pavilion. A grocery store is just a block away. Supper will be fruit, bagels, chips and salsa.

Showers are not available. I notice a house across the street with a garden hose attached to a spigot on the side of the house. After knocking on the door twice nobody answers. So I went around the house to the hose and took a shower in their side yard. Later that evening I see lights on in the house with the hose. Well, forget it. I’m not going to tell then I took a shower with their hose.

The evening is warm. We check the weather for tomorrow. Guess what. More wind.
