Brock and Paul - Cycling Weight Saviors

Stats Wednesday, September 1 – Lyons, KS to El Dorado, KS. Day distance 103.8; ride time 7 h 55 m; ave speed 13.09; total climb 1457; total miles 2,090.4

The weatherman said the wind was supposed to be less today. Wrong!!

It was worse for us. Our route called for us to head south in sections. That meant it would be almost a direct “headwind.” The last 30 miles from Newton to El Dorado were a killer. We’ve come to discover that if the wind is consistent at 10:00 am that is a precursor to really strong wind by 2:00 pm. Such was the case today. Coming out of Newton we were down to 9 ad 10 mph. And that was with a side wind. We would have to turn south.

The good part of the day was welcoming the arrival of Brock and Paul. These two guys, former work associates of Mickey’s, drove up from Dallas to hang out with us for an evening. Mick was in phone contact with them throughout the day. About 15 miles from our destination Brock and Paul meet us on the road to El Dorado. For the last 15 miles we shed our panniers giving them to the guys in the pickup. What difference that made to get rid of the weight and the bulk in the wind. It reminded me the counsel of the apostle in Hebrews 12:1 – “let us lay aside every weight and sin which so easy entangles us.” Getting rid of the weight on our bicycles made a huge difference those last few miles. Let effort. Greater speed. Though they didn’t realize it Brock and Paul became our road cycling Saviors. They took our weight. They lifted our spirits.

On the road of life – at work, at school, in our homes, among our friends – we have a Savior who is there to take the weight of our sin and guilt and who can free us from the sin that entangles.

Later that evening Brock and Paul gave us a couple of jerseys (really nice cycling jerseys) from Sewell Lexus of Dallas, Mickey's former employer. And we enjoyed a fun evening together at dinner. I'm really impressed that two of Mick's former work buddies (Mick has been gone now for over a year) would drive up from Dallas to spend an evening with us. What a statement of what Mickey means to these guys and what they mean to him!!
