Another Day (some days are ordinary)
Stats Sunday, September 5 – Springfield, MO to West Plains, MO. Day distance 115; ride time 7 h 51 m; ave speed 14.6; total climb 3600; total miles 2,446.4
With an early start we battled a headwind out of the southeast for most of the day. Add to that the topography of the Missouri rollers (hills). Add to that the poor condition of most of the road shoulders. The plus side of the day? Mild temperatures and bright sun.
Ahh…it was “a” day. It seemed that a road-killed armadillo was featured once every mile.
From the picture, notice that we passed through an Amish community. We did not see any families in buggies. We were a little early for the “church rush hour.” But the buggy wheel-path was very noticeable on the shoulder of the road as well as a depressed lane between the wheel-paths (mostly likely from the pounding of the horses’ hooves).
Mid-day we changed our route. We turned south off of hwy 60 taking hwy 63 to West Plains. Tomorrow we will dip into Arkansas connect with hwy 412 and head east. We are attempting to the take the most direct route possible.
It was another day. Another 115 miles closer to home. Yesterday (before we started this segment) my Dad called and told me that from an atlas mileage chart he noticed the distance from Springfield, MO to Charleston, SC was 990 miles. Sounding good to us.
