Wind - Eureka to Ely, NV

Stats Tuesday, Aug 10 – Eureka to Ely; day distance 77.2; ride time 6 h 15 m (7 h 30 m); ave speed 12.34; total climb 3,837; total distance 593.6.

Today was a hard day of riding. Four passes. Wind. A lot of wind. Our prevailing tailwinds have turned on us. We mostly have side winds but sometimes the wind was almost head-on.

The final 17 miles were a descent. But the descent was as difficult as a climb because of the wind. Checking the weather via the internet it said that wind in Ely was at 26 mph with gusts to 39. We felt it. One time a gush blew me into the center of the lane in a second. If a car had been approaching from behind it could have been disastrous.

Of the wind Mickey says: “It’s our greatest friend or our wost enemy!”

The wind can be convergent /congruent or divergent / discordant. Not only on a bicycle but in life. Wind is indicative of elements of life outside of you over which you have no control. Your boss, your work associates, your spouse, your kids, your friend(s), people in your church, the stock market, your favorite sports team.

No control? Spouse? Your kids? What if you are the boss? You can't control your employees? In some of these you have measures of control. But you cannot control their thoughts, attitudes, and the words they speak when you are not around. You can influence, but essentially it’s out of your control.

In a sense when God created people, He created “wind.” The wind blows this way and that. Sometimes softly. Other times violently. He created us with a capacity to be out of control. To be sideways with Him. Or against Him.

When you are going against the wind you eventually get there. It may take twice or three times as long. But you get there. With great effort.

How much sweeter, how much more enjoyable it is when you and the wind are going together in the same direction! How much more enjoyable it is when a marriage, a work environment, when parents and children, when a church community goes together in the same direction!

How much sweeter for our God, our Creator, when we are congruent with Him, with His wind.
